What is Musixmatch?

Musixmatch is an Italian music data company and platform for users to search and share song lyrics with translations. It is the largest platform of this kind in the world having 80 million users (50 million active users), 8 million lyrics, and 100+ employees

Musixmatch's mobile app displays lyrics time-synchronized with the music being played. Its native apps can scan all the songs in a user's music library, find lyrics, and be used as a music player. On Android, it also supports music streaming services like Spotify, Google Play Music, Deezer, Rhapsody, and YouTube. The company also has global agreements with Apple Music, Amazon Music, Instagram, Facebook, Google Search, and Spotify.

Features

Musixmatch has a public database where lyrics are displayed. Users can sign up and contribute lyrics, translations, and synchronization of lyrics to the audio of a song, for points that correspond to a user level. The points have no redeemable value, but are a marker of the users' contributions and impact made within the site.
Lyrics are distributed to digital (streaming) services, such as Apple Music, Amazon Music, Instagram, Facebook, Google Search, and Spotify. A number of these services exclusively use Musixmatch as their source for lyrics.

Notable users are given the role of a Lyrics Curator, where they take on the role of an editor. They are able to do specific tasks that Musixmatch requires assistance with, and are able to receive a reward for contributing. Exceptional curators are eligible to become a Specialist, where they receive higher rewards and have permissions similar to an administrator. Curators and Specialists are given extra rewards for quality-assurance work on users. In order to keep quality high, Musixmatch's employees or Specialists might lock lyrics to prevent edits when necessary, similar to Wikipedia.

History

Musixmatch was founded in Bologna in 2010 by Massimo Ciociola.

Musixmatch went live in July 2010, and as of January 2015 had raised $14.1 million in angel and venture capital funding. Musixmatch has signed agreements with publishers such as EMI Publishing, Warner/Chappell Music, Universal Music Publishing, Sony ATV, Kobalt, Peer Music and Disney Music.

The company provided Spotify's lyrics user interface on Spotify Desktop until this service was discontinued in May 2016. In November 2019, Musixmatch and Spotify reinstated their partnership, allowing Spotify's users to see lyrics (time-synced, or not) in certain regions. As of November 2021, this feature is available worldwide.

In June 2019, Musixmatch launched a partnership with Instagram, allowing all users to add Lyrics Stickers to any Instagram Music Story.

A review and discussion of SubmitHub, PlaylistPush and Musosoup (updated)

I came across a  blog post  by music producer and recording artist Matti Charlton where he evaluated SubmitHub, PlaylistPush, and Musosoup. His review caught my attention because I am familiar with all of these services and wanted to compare his findings (as artist) to my findings (as curator / promotional channel). I must admit that we share some similar thoughts about these services! This post includes some practical tips to help you make the best use of the opportunities that you may come across. (tl,dr:) I.m.h.o. the only service really worth the money is SubmitHub, but finding the right tastemakers on SubmitHub will take time (and money). UPDATE - January 22, 2023: I have added and commented on a response from Musosoup at the end of this post. SubmitHub basics There are various types of channels on SubmitHub. In essence, the channels break down into the following categories: Radio/continuous streaming - play your music on e.g. (Internet) Radio stations, YouTube live streams, etc.

DIY - Getting Your Lyrics Displayed On Spotify, Deezer, Apple Music, ...

Why would you want your lyrics to appear on as many services as possible? If the lyrics to a song are easily accessible, 88% of listeners will view them (e.g. by pressing an icon on a webpage or in an app) The addition of lyrics improves the listening experience. Listeners will be curious about what the artist is saying during live performances where artists are speaking / calling out to the audience (and are less audible). Law requires websites and services to pay royalties each time lyrics are displayed (songwriter royalties). With 88% of listeners viewing song lyrics, having your lyrics displayed on streaming services is a simple way to generate additional royalties! The process that is used to collect these royalties, also ensures that you receive royalties when your song is covered by another artist, when lyrics are used in books, sheet music, etc..   The steps to get your song lyrics on Spotify, Apple Music, etc. is relatively easy... and we have tools and guides to help you. Modeling succesful artists Facebook ads to help grow your own Spotify followers

Maybe you've heard this before... "I tried using Facebook ads to expand my Spotify, but it wasn't working for me. How can I grow the right way?" I personally don't like Facebook ads because I believe that Facebook is more concerned with making money for itself than with helping you. But Facebook is still where most of the 'eyes' are (including the eyes of your target audience), so that is where you need to increase visibility. So let's try to maximize every dollar we spend.  Before I forget, don't 'boost' your posts on Facebook! 'Boosting' posts on Facebook is like flushing money down the toilet. Facebook just takes your money without any lasting results… Facebook has more than 10 campaign objectives that align with business goals, such as increasing sales, leads, brand awareness, and more. Boosted posts are only optimized for engagement which has no correlation to growing sales or brand awareness among other goals. They'll get
